SEO & AEO

What Is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO), and How Is It Different from SEO?

Published 29 de julio de 2026

Search behavior has quietly split in two. Buyers still type queries into Google, but increasingly they also ask ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google's AI Overviews directly, and if those tools do not mention a brand in their answer, that brand is invisible at the exact moment someone was ready to act. Answer Engine Optimization, or AEO, is the emerging practice of making content citable by those AI systems, alongside, not instead of, traditional SEO.

The two disciplines overlap heavily but are not identical. Traditional SEO optimizes for ranking in a list of links a human will scan and click through. AEO optimizes for being the specific source an AI model quotes or paraphrases inside a single generated answer, where there is no scrolling past position one: either the model cites you or it does not. That shifts some priorities: clear, directly answerable structure, meaning a specific question followed by a concise, factual answer, tends to get extracted more reliably than long, meandering prose, even if the meandering prose would still rank fine in classic search.

Structured data plays a bigger role in AEO than many teams realize. Schema markup, including FAQ schema, Organization schema and structured service data, gives language models an explicit, machine-readable signal about what a page is and what it claims, which appears to improve the odds of being cited accurately rather than paraphrased incorrectly or skipped entirely.

The technical foundation matters just as much for AEO as for SEO. If a page cannot be crawled and rendered properly, it cannot be cited either. The difference shows up in content strategy: AEO rewards content organized around the specific questions a buyer would ask an AI assistant, answered clearly and early in the page, backed by schema that makes the answer unambiguous to extract.

For now, tracking AEO performance is less mature than tracking search rankings. There is no universal Search Console for AI answers yet, but manually checking whether a brand shows up when asking ChatGPT or Perplexity the buyer questions it should own is a reasonable starting point.
